Thames View Bridge School Curriculum Statement
Principles upon which the curriculum is based
We believe that each pupil, regardless of ability, has a right to a rich and varied educational experience with the framework of a broad based curriculum. All pupils are valued for what they bring into the school and they are entitled to take part in all that the school offers, in the most appropriate ways possible given the resources available. At Thames View Bridge School we believe that all of our pupils, regardless of gender, ethnicity, ability, disability or sexuality are entitled to a high quality education that will maximise their life chances. We understand that all pupils at Thames View Bridge School have had significant difficulties coping with the mainstream school setting. Our overall aim is to make sure that our pupils are ready to learn and make progress, respectful of others and safe.
All pupils are entitled to an education that enables them to:
- achieve their best
- become confident individuals living fulfilling lives, and
- make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education or training
The curriculum at Thames View Bridge School offers pupils curriculum experiences that are broad, balanced, relevant, differentiated and progressive and which promote the spiritual, intellectual, personal, social and physical development of all our pupils. Accommodating the educational needs of all its pupils and enabling pupils to acquire the knowledge, concepts, skills and values that are relevant to their present and future lives is core to the school culture, management, organisation, curriculum content and approaches to teaching and learning.
The pupils at Thames View Bridge School are not a homogeneous group, and even those of the same apparent developmental age may not progress though the stages of development at the same rate but our aim is to provide all pupils with relevant and appropriately challenging targets and work at each stage of their development.
The curriculum model for Thames View Bridge School aims to ensure that:
• achievement is maximised;
• each pupil has a personalised curriculum appropriate to their needs;
• teachers deliver lessons at an appropriate pace;
• expectations and targetsare set and reinforced;
• pupils are challenged and supported at the right level;
• a positive, nurturing learning environment is maintained;
• pupils develop confidence and self-esteem through appropriately differentiated pastoral programmes.
Pupils will be helped to build upon their learning and develop as more independent learners. The atmosphere will be one of supportive collaboration where pupils feel that their needs are being effectively met and all are making progresss together. The key character traits of confidence and resilience will be developed through the differentiated approaches to teaching and learning.
Communication and speaking and listening skills will be continually modelled and practised with regular opportunities for individual and focussed group work. The Speech and Language Therapy Service will be integral in delivering support which ensures progression for all pupils in the school.
All pupils will benefit from following a curriculum tailored to their needs with the expectation that the quality of learning and progress for the majority will exceed expectations relative to National Data sets.
